Ascension hosting hiring event Thursday

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — Ascension is seeking healthcare workers to fill open positions at its two largest hospitals in Wichita.

The healthcare system says it has immediate openings for nursing staff in departments at Via Christi St. Francis and St. Joseph hospitals. Positions are available in the emergency department, stroke, surgery, oncology, cardiovascular, labor and delivery, and pediatrics.

The nursing shortage isn’t just a local or national problem but a global one. Last year, the International Council of Nurses released a report calling for the worldwide shortage of nurses to be treated as a global health emergency, citing the impacts of the pandemic and nurse burnout. The National Institute of Health reports that by 2029, there will be a 73% increase in Americans 65 years of age and older, leading to an even greater need for medical personnel, including nurses, to provide care.

To address the shortage, Ascension has been working with local school districts, colleges, and universities to create a direct pipeline for students interested in medical careers. They are also working with the Greater Wichita Partnership and the Wichita Workforce Alliance to resolve the shortage.

The hiring event will take place Thursday from 3 to 5 p.m. at Via Christi St. Francis in Conference Room #203. Ascension is looking for both experienced and recent graduates to fill open nursing positions.

Nurses interested in attending are encouraged to bring their resumes. They can wear scrubs, but that is not a requirement.

Ascension says they will conduct same-day tours and job offers may be made to those interested. They are also offering referral bonuses and sign-on bonuses for some positions.
