Akron Municipal Court celebrates opening of new Resource Center

AKRON, Ohio – The Akron Municipal Court on Thursday cut the ribbon on its new Resource Center.

The Resource Center is located on the second floor of the courthouse at 172 S. Broadway St. Court staff hosted a tour of the Resource Center at the event, which also included information about the center’s housing support, mediation and community resources.

Plans for the center have been in the works since the Akron Municipal Court relocated from its previous space in the Harold K. Stubbs Justice Center in November 2023. The court had been housed in its previous location since 1966.

Judges Ron Cable and Nicole Walker launched the court’s housing program last fall. The program aims to promote workable solutions between landlords and tenants through mediation. The program is funded by a $240,000 National Center for State Courts’ Eviction Diversion Initiative grant, according to the court. The National Center for State Courts created the grant program in response to the nationwide eviction crisis, according to the court.

Ten courts throughout the U.S. received more than $2 million through the grant program. The Akron Municipal Court was the only court in Ohio to receive the grant, according to the court. The Akron Municipal Court used the funds to hire two new full-time staff members: a housing program specialist/facilitator and a court navigator/bailiff.
