Labuan urged to use vertical farming techniques

LABUAN, SEPT 27 – The Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security (KPKM) urged Labuan to adapt the concept of vertical farming as a strategy to strengthen the agricultural sector and address the ongoing food supply shortage.

The minister, Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu, said the island’s lack of land for large-scale agriculture made vertical farming an important alternative, while emphasizing the need for innovative solutions to improve food security in Labuan.

“I have instructed the Department of Agriculture to draw up a plan to realize this idea,” he told reporters after an engagement session with KPKM agencies and representatives from the agriculture and fisheries sectors at Kilan Agricultural Park, today.

He said the Department of Agriculture should send some potential Agroprenuers on a study tour to Sungai Buloh, where they can learn directly from the successful implementation of vertical farming techniques.

“This study visit will enable potential Agroprenuers to understand the mechanism of vertical farming and how it can be adapted to the context of Labuan,” he said.

He also emphasized the need for comprehensive research to ensure the success of the project, adding that KPKM is ready to provide financial allocations and other assistance to facilitate this initiative. – Named
