The Buckeyes (3-0, 0-0) cruised through a less than stellar nonconference slate by outscoring their opponents 157-20. Akron, Western Michigan and Marshall were completely outmatched.

It marked the first time since 1919 that Ohio State won its first three games by 35 or more points.

The Buckeyes’ offense is third in the nation in scoring, tallying 52.3 points per game. They are fifth in total offense with 552 yards per game.

Senior quarterback Will Howard has blended in nicely with 795 yards and six touchdowns with one interception. Howard also has two scores on the ground.

He is surrounded by star power. Freshman receiving sensation Jeremiah Smith has 281 yards and at least one touchdown in every game this season. He is averaging 20.1 yards per reception. Senior receiver Emeka Egbuka has 14 receptions for 266 yards and one touchdown while averaging 19 yards per reception.

Senior running back TreVeyon Henderson and junior running back Quinshon Judkins have been the equivalent of thunder and lightning in the backfield.

They are specifically jamming up the passing game to the tune of 113.3 yards per game, which is fifth in the nation. Senior defensive end Jack Sawyer has four tackles and a sack. Senior defensive tackle Tyleik Williams has seven tackles with 1 1/2 sacks. Senior cornerback Denzel Burke has six tackles with one interception.

Ohio State’s only weakness appears to be a flare up on special teams after kicker Jayden Fielding botched three consecutive kickoffs out of bounds against Marshall.

Continuing a trend, Ohio State crushed the Spartans with a 38-3 victory in last year’s meeting. The Buckeyes have dominated the series with eight consecutive victories over Michigan State with an average margin of victory over 30 points. Ohio State has outscored Michigan State 147-26 in the first half of the last four meetings combined.

The Spartans (3-1, 1-0 Big Ten) are coming off rugged loss against Boston College and have a Big Ten victory over Maryland under their belt.

Michigan State sophomore quarterback Aidan Chiles continues to weather growing pains, tossing three interceptions in the close contest last week. Chiles, an Oregon State transfer, has thrown the second-most interceptions (7) in the FBS and has racked up 891 passing yards with four touchdowns while adding three rushing scores. His inconsistent play is often accompanied by a flash of brilliance.

Rolling out a two-back attack, Michigan State is averaging 153.8 rushing yards per game. Junior running back Nate Carter and senior back Kay’Ron Lynch-Adams have found themselves combining for just under 500 yards with two touchdowns.

Freshman receiver Nick Marsh has tallied 11 receptions for 232 yards and one touchdown. He is averaging 21.1 yards per reception.

The Spartans have the most turnovers in the Big Ten with 10. That statistic also places them near the bottom of the FBS.

Michigan State’s pass rush has been potent and will be a nice notch up for Howard. The Spartans defense did a fantastic job in holding Boston College scrambling quarterback Thomas Castellanos to just 15 yards on 15 carries.

Ohio State has won 42 consecutive games against unranked opponents. It’s the longest active streak in the FBS.
