Shaker Heights City School District adds new safety measures to high school’s home football games

SHAKER HEIGHTS, Ohio — Shaker Heights City School District’s efforts to implement safety measures to provide a secured environment continued Friday night as the measures extend to the high school’s home football games.

The district started piloting new security measures beginning with the Shaker Heights vs. Brunswick football game at Russell H. Rupp Field.

Scott Stephens, a spokesman for the school district, said the game was played Friday without any incidents. cleveland.com and The Plain Dealer reached out to Superintendent Dr. David Glasner Saturday morning for additional comment.

The district added advanced metal detectors systems at the stadium’s entrance to screen all spectators, according to an email sent out to families on Wednesday.

“These devices are non-invasive and provide a quick, effective way to enhance safety,” the email says. “The District is testing these devices as part of our ongoing efforts to evaluate and implement effective solutions to address safety and security concerns.”

Some of the safety measures during the home games include:

  • Spectators will not be allowed to come into the home games after halftime
  • All Shaker Heights High School and middle school students must show their student ID with a valid game ticket to get into the stadium.
  • Students without a valid Shaker Heights Schools student ID will not be allowed in. Only students from Shaker Heights and that game’s opposing school will be admitted to home varsity football games.
  • All middle school and elementary school students must be accompanied by a paying adult.
  • Spectators may not bring backpacks into the stadium.
  • The high school building will not be open during the games

The safety measures at the home football games follow measure put in place inside of the high school after two students were arrested on campus with weapons in the past couple weeks.

Students on Sept. 19 were required to be scanned with hand-held metal detectors and go through a backpack search before they could enter the school.

Shaker Height’s next home game will be against Mentor on Oct. 4.
