WELLINGTON, SEPT 30 – New Zealand (NZ) has reclaimed the world record for the largest haka, with thousands of people performing the traditional Maori dance in Auckland, the German News Agency reported. dpa.
Organizers said 6,531 people performed the country’s most famous Haka, Ka Mate yesterday evening.
“What started as a bold idea a year ago to reclaim the record has now become a reality. A lot is at stake,” said organizer Hinewehi Mohi. The previous record was held by 4,028 people from France in 2014.
Haka comes from Maori mythology with wiriwirithe trembling hand movements and body gestures seen in the haka, resemble waves as heat rises from the earth. The haka is a customary way of welcoming visiting tribes but it is also performed to prepare warriors for battle.
Today, the haka is performed at important occasions including sporting events, funerals, weddings, graduations and welcoming ceremonies.
“Haka is an important part of our culture and bringing back this world record mana (spiritual power) from France and back to its land of origin and making sure it is done correctly and with integrity is important,” said Mohi.
“This historic event has allowed us to showcase our rich cultural heritage to the world and strengthen the deep connection we all share.” – Named
