COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine has activated the Ohio National Guard to assist North Carolina in its recovery efforts following severe flooding and damage caused by Hurricane Helene.
One CH-47 Chinook helicopter and six soldiers will provide support in moving supplies, equipment and personnel, according to a news release. They are headed to North Carolina from Company B, 3rd Battalion, 238th Aviation Regiment, based in North Canton.
Additionally, DeWine has activated 10 Airmen from the Homeland Response Forces, 121st Air Refueling Wing to assist first responders in fatality search and recovery.
“Ohio is answering the call to help Governor Cooper and North Carolina in its recovery,” said DeWine in the release. “In the aftermath of this storm, many roads are blocked or completely washed away, so this aerial support will be crucial in getting resources where they’re needed the most.”
The Ohio National Guard’s aid comes in response to a request from North Carolina through the Emergency Management Assistance Compact, a national mutual aid partnership that facilitates state-to-state assistance during state or federally declared emergencies.
