Edmonton is kicking off Canadian Finals Rodeo (CFR) Rodeo Week with an authentic cattle drive through the city’s downtown core.

Rodeo Week is a week-long welcome home party for CFR, which has a 40-year history in Edmonton, running from Oct. 2 – 5. The festivities kicked off at noon Wednesday with an authentic one-of-a-kind cattle drive through downtown, starting at 15 Sir Winston Churchill Square and parading up near the Ice District fan park on 102 Street and 104 Ave.

The cattle drive was led by experienced ranchers and rodeo professionals, with a spectator area set up at the southwest corner of fan park.

The cattle drive was not announced beforehand, as organizers hoped to surprise Edmontonians.

Rodeo Week will feature a variety of events each day, including a Canadian Country Expo, a Black Tie Bingo fundraiser for the Rodeo Cowboy’s Benevolent Fund, a chili cook-off, daily tailgate parties, nightly all-ages parties, and more.

The CFR began in Edmonton in 1974 and was hosted here until 2018 when it was moved to Red Deer under a 10-year contract. It was cancelled in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic before returning in 2021.
