Flooding risk as Met Éireann issues rain warning for Cork, Kerry and Waterford

Flooding risk as Met Éireann issues rain warning for Cork, Kerry and Waterford

While most of Munster has been experiencing relatively pleasant weather conditions since Monday, things look set to worsen over the coming days, with a status yellow rain warning issued for Cork, Kerry and Waterford on Saturday.

Met Éireann is forecasting “heavy and persistent rain” for the entire day on Saturday, from midnight through to midnight on Sunday.

During this time, the forecaster said localised flooding and difficult travel conditions are likely.

National outlook

More immediately, Met Éireann said Thursday will be “largely dry with sunny spell” with the fairest conditions likely to be felt in the north and east. Outbreaks of rain and drizzle will develop later this afternoon however, as cloud moves in from the west.

The highest temperatures today will range from 13C to 16C.

Thursday night will be mostly cloudy with further outbreaks of rain and drizzle, though it will be somewhat drier in the east and southeast. Temperatures tonight will drop back to between 8C and 13C.

Friday too will be mostly cloudy and damp, with yet more rain and drizzle forecast for much of the country, though there may be a chance of some sunnier spells in the southwest and west.

Temperatures Friday will be slightly higher than Thursday, ranging from around 14C to 18C.

Met Éireann has predicted that Friday night will be “mild and wet overnight with widespread rain” which may turn heavy in some areas and lead to localised flooding. Temperatures on Friday night will only fall back to around 11C to 15C with occasionally fresh, south or southeast winds.

Saturday is expected to be wet and breezy with showery outbreaks of rain, which will be heavy at times. Amid the status yellow warning, Met Éireann says localised flooding is likely, especially especially in Cork, Kerry and Waterford. Highest temperatures on Saturday will range from 14C to 17C.

Saturday night will be wet at first with widespread outbreaks of showery rain, though this will gradually become confined to the north and east by early morning. Thereafter, drier and clearer conditions will begin moving in from the southwest. Temperatures Saturday night will range from 9C to 13C.

On Sunday, Met Éireann says that the last of the lingering cloud and rain will clear the north and east in the morning giving way to a day of sunny spells and scattered showers, with the heaviest and most persistent rain likely to be seen the south and west.

Temperatures on Sunday will be slightly warmer than previous days, at around the 15C to 18C mark.
