As a dentist — and someone who likes candy myself — I’m here to tell you that it’s possible to enjoy Halloween treats while still protecting your teeth. The key is to make mindful choices and take care of your oral health along the way.

Here are some practical tips to help you and your family have a healthier Halloween.

It’s not just about how much you eat, it’s about how long it stays in your mouth

Many people think the more candy you eat, the worse it is for your teeth. While it’s important not to go overboard, the real issue is how long the candy stays in your mouth.

Hard candies and sticky treats, like lollipops or caramels, can be especially damaging because they dissolve slowly, allowing sugar to linger on your teeth for an extended time. This gives harmful bacteria more time to feed on the sugar and produce acids that lead to tooth decay.

If you want to indulge, choose candy that you can eat quickly — like chocolate, which doesn’t stick to your teeth as much as other treats. The shorter the contact time, the less damage to your smile.

The best and worst candies for your teeth

Not all candies are created equal when it comes to your dental health.

Sour candies, though tempting, are among the worst offenders. Their high acid content, combined with sugar, can erode tooth enamel and lead to cavities.

Sticky candies like gummies and taffy also pose a problem because they cling to teeth and are difficult to clean off, providing a feast for bacteria.

Brushing, of course, is the best way to ensure your teeth are clean. But if you can’t brush right away, rinsing with water is a great quick fix.

Eat candy after a meal

Timing matters when it comes to candy consumption. Eating candy after a meal is preferable to snacking on sweets throughout the day.

During meals, your mouth produces more saliva, which helps wash away food particles and neutralize acids. This can help protect your teeth from the effects of sugar more effectively than if you were snacking on candy alone.

At the end of the day, enjoying candy in moderation is the best approach. Set limits for yourself and your family, and balance sugary treats with tooth-friendly foods like fruits and vegetables.
