Strongsville Fire and Emergency Services earns Gold Award for heart attack care: Talk of the Towns

STRONGSVILLE, OHIO – Strongsville Fire and Emergency Services (SFES) has been honored with the American Heart Association’s (AHA) 2024 Mission: Lifeline EMS Gold Award – Target Heart Attack Honor Roll. This award acknowledges SFES’s dedication to delivering swift, research-based care for the most critical types of heart attacks.

The Mission: Lifeline award is given to agencies that consistently treat patients according to the latest AHA-recommended practices. Achieving Gold status reflects an uninterrupted 24 months or more of such excellence.

This year also marks a decade of SFES’s recognition by the AHA, highlighting the department’s exceptional contributions to life-saving care during cardiovascular emergencies. Attaining Gold designation signifies the highest level of achievement in emergency medical services across the nation.

While SFES is honored to receive this prestigious award, much of the success is attributed to individuals who take decisive action in emergencies.

These first responders play a vital role in the “Chain of Survival,” identifying cardiac arrests, initiating emergency responses, performing high-quality CPR, and, when possible, administering rapid defibrillation.

SFES is grateful for its partnership with Southwest General Health Center, the Department’s Medical Control, which supports an active AHA CPR program. This initiative empowers businesses, churches, and residents to learn life-saving skills and make a difference in their communities.

Health expo: North Royalton residents are in for a treat as the city, schools and partner organizations prepare to host the annual Health Fair & Family Expo on Sat., Nov. 2. This year’s event, taking place at North Royalton High School, 14713 Ridge Rd., from 8:30 a.m. to noon, promises a blend of health awareness, community engagement, and family-friendly activities.

The highlight of the day is the 14th Annual North Royalton 5K Bear Run, a popular event that draws fitness enthusiasts from across the region. Participants can register online. Adding to the excitement, North Royalton City Schools will host a Student Turkey Trot, combining physical activity with a food drive to benefit the North Royalton Food Bank.

The expo boasts an impressive lineup of health services and screenings. Southwest General Health Center and UH Parma Medical Center will offer free health information and screenings, including physical therapy assessments, blood pressure checks, non-fasting cholesterol and glucose tests, hearing screenings, and stroke assessments. Attendees can also learn hands-only CPR and receive flu shots courtesy of Discount Drug Mart Pharmacy.

Community engagement is at the heart of this event. The North Royalton Police, Fire, and Recreation Departments will be present with safety vehicles, showcasing their services to the community. Veterans can connect with representatives from VA Northeast Ohio Healthcare and Cuyahoga County Veterans Services.

Animal lovers will love Friends of City Dogs Cleveland and Kitten Krazy, offering pet rescue information and adoption opportunities. The school’s mascot, Gibby, will be there to entertain, along with face painting for children and therapy dogs to interact with attendees.

One of the most anticipated features is the complimentary pancake and sausage breakfast, courtesy of North Royalton City Council President Paul F. Marnecheck. “This breakfast is our way of bringing the community together and starting the day on a positive note,” Marnecheck stated.

The event also includes a Vitalant Community Blood Drive, underlining the importance of blood donation in healthcare.

With door prizes, raffle basket drawings, and a variety of vendors, there’s something for everyone at this year’s Health Fair & Family Expo. Whether you’re running in the 5K, getting a health screening, or simply enjoying the community atmosphere, this event promises to be a memorable day for all of North Royalton.
