Malaysia is targeting digital growth during its tenure as ASEAN chairman

KUALA LUMPUR, 4 OCT – Malaysia aims to use its upcoming term as ASEAN chairman in 2025 to increase digital growth and cooperation among the group, said Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo yesterday.

Through cooperation, policy leadership and infrastructure development, Malaysia can strengthen the digital content ecosystem, foster innovation and position itself as a regional leader in the creation and distribution of digital content, he said in his speech at the launch of the Malaysian Digital Content Festival (MYDCF).

“This will not only boost the local economy but also create a dynamic and interconnected network of digital content throughout Southeast Asia,” he said.

“Together, we can drive innovation, nurture creativity, and build a digital economy that not only benefits Malaysians, but contributes to global digital transformation,” he added.

Gobind also said Malaysia is now home to over 300 digital content studios, with over 180 original intellectual properties (IP) in animation and games. Its digital creative industry has generated US$1.4 billion in revenue by 2022, with exports amounting to RM850 million and supporting over 11,000 jobs.

“This underlines the great potential of the sector to generate high-value jobs and make a great contribution to our economy,” he said.

At the same time, subsectors in the creative technology industry are also thriving with the size of the global animation market expected to increase to over US$587 billion by 2030.

“The global game market is also growing rapidly, following the phenomenon of global digitization,” he said, adding that Malaysia is striving to become a hub of regional digital creative producers by 2030. – Xinhua
