Kent State University signs agreement to internationalize higher education system in Turkmenistan

KENT, Ohio – Kent State University this week hosted representatives from the Turkmenistan Ministry of Education and the U.S. State Department to formalize a relationship that will internationalize the higher education system in Turkmenistan.

The visit included the signing of a memorandum of understanding to explore partnership opportunities between Kent State and three public universities in Turkmenistan: International University for Humanities and Development, the Institute of International Relations of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan and the Turkmen State Institute of Architecture and Construction.

A former Soviet republic located in Central Asia, Turkmenistan follows a traditionally structured higher education model. The partnership with Kent State will allow the participating universities to further their development and innovation while expanding access to education that aligns with current standards. The partnership also aims to position Turkmenistan as a more active participant in the global education community, according to a university news release.

The partnership will offer academic and cultural exchange opportunities for Turkmen and Kent State students.

The signing ceremony included a cultural celebration featuring a performance by Turkmen dancers and musicians. The celebration also paid homage to the 18th-century poet and philosopher Magtymguly Fragi, who is widely recognized for his influence on Turkmen language, literature and national identity, according to the release.
