Failing to prepare the house, the contractor was ordered to pay back RM50,000

LABUAN, 4 OCT – The Malaysian Consumer Claims Tribunal (TTPM) in Labuan ordered a contractor to refund RM50,000 to a customer after failing to complete the construction of a house according to the date set in the agreement.

Director of the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KDPN) Labuan, Junaidah Arbain said based on the agreement, the contractor was required to complete the construction of the house on 7 October 2023.

He said the case was heard on 25 July 2024 at the Labuan TTPM which decided that the contractor must pay the client RM50,000 within 14 days from the date of the tribunal’s decision.

“However, the contractor not only missed the deadline but also caused the client to bear additional costs to complete the remaining construction work,” he said in a statement to Bernama today.

Junaidah said TTPM functions as an alternative legal channel for consumers who claim compensation under the Consumer Protection Act 1999 (Act 599), for claims not exceeding RM50,000.

He urged the public to be aware of their rights as consumers and take action by filing a claim in the tribunal if the goods purchased or services do not meet the promised standards. – Named
