Perry vs. Orange football: Pirates get record-setting performance in big win

PERRY, Ohio — Walter Moses became his school’s career passing yards king as Perry beat Orange, 62-0, in the Chagrin Valley Conference Chagrin Division contest at Perry Alumni Stadium on Friday night.

The Pirates, who are ranked 11th in this week’s cleveland.com Top 25 and in a tug-a-war for the top spot in the OHSAA’s Division IV, Region 13, improve to 6-1. The Lions, who are in the same region, fall to 5-2.

Moses passed for 176 yards and three touchdowns. His 80-yard touchdown pass to Luke Sivon in the first quarter gave him the record.

“Able to break it with Luke is actually special because we’ve been doing this for a long time together,“ said the senior. Moses is five touchdowns away from the school’s career passing TD record. “It don’t matter to me who catches it. I’m happy for anyone.”

However, the Pirates had the ground game working. Dare’On Howard, Carter Hopkins and Owen McKoon had long touchdown runs. Howard, a senior, scored on the Pirates’ first possession with a 41-yard TD run. On their first play on their drive, Hopkins had a 65-yard TD run. The Pirates led 21-0 at the end of one.

McKoon’s 90-yard TD run in the second quarter put the Pirates up 35-0. Sivon was on the receiving end of a 32-yard TD pass and Hopkins’ 2-yard TD run put the Pirates up 48-0 at the half.

“I am very proud of our defense,” said Perry head coach Bob Gecewich. “They really played a solid game. They stopped the run and the pass.”

Xavier Johnson and Carter Crofoot had short touchdown runs in the running-clock second-half.

The Lions’ next opponent will be on Thursday as they host Hawken. While the Pirates will take on rival Harvey on Friday.
