Guardians OF Steven Kwan saves a run with diving catch in ALDS Game 2 (Video)

CLEVELAND, Ohio — Game 2 of the American League Division Series between the Tigers and Guardians remained scoreless in the eighth inning thanks to the effort of Cleveland’s two-time Gold Glove left fielder.

Steven Kwan’s diving grab of a liner by Detroit’s Wenceel Perez survied a Tigers challenge and saved the go-ahead run for Cleveland with two runners on base.

Perez drilled a 98 mph cutter from Emmanuel Clase toward Kwan, who was able to get his glove under the ball as he dove head-first to make the catch with two out. Hunter Gaddis had allowed a double to Matt Vierling before striking out Colt Keith. Gaddis intentionally walked Riley Greene before manager Stephen Vogt summoned Clase from the bullpen.

Perez fell behind in the count, 1-2, before sending Clase’s fourth pitch to left. Kwan’s catch ended the inning, but Tigers manager A.J. Hinch immediately signaled to umpire crew chief Todd Tichenor that he wanted to challenge the call.

After a breif review, Tichenor told the crowd at Progressive Field that the call stood, and the score remained deadlocked at 0-0.

The play was reminiscent of Kwan’s diving catch and subsequent double play that ended a game between the Guardians and Astros on May 1 at Minute Maid Park.

Kwan won back-to-back Gold Glove Awards in left field for the Guardians in 2022 and 2023.
