Teen arrested in armed robbery of 71-year-old man

AKRON, Ohio — A 15-year-old male is facing multiple charges after he was arrested in connection with the armed robbery of a 71-year-old man in the North Hill neighborhood.

Police say two males were involved in the robbery, which occurred shortly after 6 p.m. Friday on the 1100 block of Clifton Avenue, in the same neighborhood as the Harris-Jackson Community Learning Center. The victim tells police he was walking home from a store when the two males, both wearing masks and armed with handguns, approached.

The suspects demanded the victim’s money before pushing him to the ground, then taking his wallet and cellphone. The suspects then ran from the scene.

Responding officers began searching the area and ended up chasing the suspects on foot for several blocks. The teen arrested was found hiding in a wooded area near a baseball field in Patterson Park. The other suspect has not been found.

Police say the victim’s phone was recovered and a loaded handgun they believe was used in the robbery also was recovered.

The arrested teen is charged with aggravated robbery, carrying a concealed weapon, and obstructing official business.
