DHAKA, OCT 8 – Days of devastating flash floods, triggered by torrential rain and torrential water from upstream, have left hundreds of thousands of people stranded in Bangladesh’s northern Mymensingh province, with thousands of homes still submerged.
According to the National Disaster Response Coordination Center (NDRCC) under the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief, severe floods have hit low-lying areas in three districts, Mymensingh, Sherpur and Nertokona, with six people killed in the unprecedented floods.
The center said in its latest update that six people, including four men and two women, had died in the floods as of yesterday.
Most of the serious floods occurred in Sherpur district where they caused huge damage to life, property and crops.
While the flood situation improved in Sherpur, it worsened in parts of Netrakona and Mymensingh as the flood moved downstream, washing away the river’s protective embankment. The flood situation is also deteriorating with rivers flooding large areas of land and disrupting the lives of hundreds of thousands of people. – Xinhua
