Edmonton police looking for Good Samaritan after fiery fatal crash

Article content

Police want to talk with a Good Samaritan who helped save a 19-year-old man from a fiery fatal crash in northwest Edmonton last week.

On Oct. 3, around 1:40 a.m., a white 1997 Dodge Dakota headed north on 149 Street near Yellowhead Trail. While turning east, the vehicle crossed the grassy median and struck a cement barricade, causing it to catch fire, police said in a Monday news release.

An unknown person stopped and helped the driver out of the vehicle before it was engulfed in flames, police said.

When officers arrived, firefighters were dealing with the burning vehicle and EMS was treating the 19-year-old, who was taken to hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

Police said they later learned a second person was in the vehicle at the time of the collision, and on Oct. 4, police identified the remains of a 19-year-old man in the severely burned vehicle.

The major collision investigations section has taken over the investigation, and police believe both speed and impairment were factors in the crash.

Investigators are looking to identify the Good Samaritan who helped the driver out of the vehicle and any other witnesses to the crash. Anyone with dash-cam footage can contact police at 780-423-4567.
