Irish woman, 22, in intensive care after being hit by a car in Italy

An Irish woman is in intensive care after being struck by a car in Catania, Italy.

The woman, aged 22, was crossing the road along the Andrea Doria Avenue in Catania on Sunday, October 6 at approximately 5.30pm when the incident occurred.

She had first been taken to the hospital in Santa Sofia, but was later transferred to San Marco hospital in Catania where she underwent neurosurgery.

She remains in intensive care after sustaining life-threatening injuries, but her condition is stable.

The young woman was jogging when she was struck by a car driven by a man in his 20s, who stopped to help, according to reports from local media.

The Department of Foreign Affairs told the Irish Examiner it was aware of the case and is providing consular assistance.

“As with all consular cases, the department does not comment on the detail of individual cases,” a spokesperson for the department said.

The Mayor of Catania, Enrico Trantino, said he was praying for her recovery.

“The Irish girl, who was hit while crossing the ring road on the pedestrian crossing, at the beginning of Viale Andrea Doria, underwent surgery. Her condition is stable, but she remains in a reserved prognosis,” he wrote on social media.

For now I am concerned with knowing the evolution of her condition, praying for her recovery.

Mr Trantino also mentioned a similar accident that occurred on the same stretch of road about a year ago, when 18-year-old student, Chiara Adorno, lost her life in a collision.
