RIO DE JANEIRO, OCT 9 – Brazil’s Supreme Court yesterday allowed social media platform X to resume operations in the country after being banned for more than a month for not complying with court rulings.
Judge Alexandre de Moraes lifted the ban after X paid a fine of about US$5.17 million to the Brazilian government, local media reported.
“I hereby declare the suspension lifted and allow the immediate resumption of the activities of X Brasil Internet Ltd within the national territory. I also ordered the National Telecommunications Agency to implement this decision and report back to the Supreme Court within 24 hours,” said Moraes.
X was banned on August 30 for refusing to appoint a legal representative in Brazil and for not paying a fine for ignoring a court order. The platform has since appointed legal representatives and complied with a separate court order to block the accounts of individuals investigated for inciting a coup in Brazil. – Xinhua
