Cork’s Kabin Crew and Clare based Lisdoonvarna Crew’s viral hit is longlisted for a 2025 Grammy Award.
The group of young rappers released their viral song ‘The Spark’ earlier this year which received support from some of the biggest musicians and rappers in the world, such as Stormzy and Becky Hill.
Along with performing with Becky Hill during her Musgrave Park performance in July, the talented teens entertained the masses at Electric Picnic in Laois, All Together Now in Waterford and Belgian music festival Pukkelpop.
The Spark was created by Rhyme Island, an initiative that gives young people the space to discover their potential to rap via a range of workshops and classes based in Knocknaheeny, and in collaboration with Creative Ireland.
The music video was directed by Kabin videographer Seán Downey, aka SwanIGuess, and filmed at The Kabin as well as on location in Knocknaheeny, and at Cork venue The Pavilion.
The Spark was released ahead of Cruinniú na nÓg, the National Day of Children’s creativity in Ireland, where community outlets and arts facilities around the country will host free events and workshops — dedicated to showing young people how they can find a spark of their own.
Their track is among others on the 67th Grammy Ballot for the Best Dance/Electronic Recording and Song of the Year.
Kabin Studio founder and producer Garry McCarthy said “what a mad few months this has been” in an Instagram post.
“A song that we created for the @rhymeisland initiative with the crew of legendary kids and tutors @thekabinstudio and in Lisdoonvarna is long listed for the Grammys.”
The Grammy awards will take place in Los Angeles next February and the young stars must wait until early November to see if they have made the final short list for nominations and head Stateside.
