500,000 AI-based jobs created in 6 years

KUALA LUMPUR, 10 OCT – A total of 500,000 jobs based on artificial intelligence (AI) covering various sectors in Malaysia are expected to be created within the next six years.

Deputy President of the Internet of Things (IoT) Association of Malaysia, Datuk P. Sri Ganes said the shift in AI-based employment patterns required appropriate skills and training.

“In a global context, AI technology is expected to take over or replace 85 million jobs but at the same time, it will change the landscape of various industries by creating 97 million new jobs. Therefore, the development of local talent capable of producing innovative solutions and becoming a key player in AI needs to be a priority,” he told reporters after the launch of the country’s first AI comprehensive certification program launched by Digital Minister, Gobind Singh Deo, recently.

Sri Ganes said the certification program involving collaboration between SG TVET Group Berhad and the United States Artificial Intelligence Institute (USAII) was an effort to drive the availability of AI in Malaysia.

“Through this program, 10 leading companies in the country also offer job placement guarantees to students after graduation,” he said.

He said the strengthening of the research and innovation ecosystem as well as the strengthening of the enabling ecosystem for the higher education sector in the implementation of AI was further strengthened through the collaboration.

“This initiative, among other things, aims to strengthen the country’s digital economy by fostering AI expertise and increasing the marketability of the workforce in addition to making Malaysia a key player in the global AI landscape,” he said.

He said the AI Engineering Certification Program offers dual certification issued by USAII and the Skills Development Department (JPK).

“With this double certification, students will receive accreditation at the international and national levels, since the curriculum was developed by the USAII Global AI Council and local academic experts in accordance with the National Occupational Skills Standard (NOSS) which is a document for assessing the competence of skilled workers in Malaysia,” he explained.

Sri Ganes said such an AI program would be a major contributor to Malaysia’s goal of becoming a global AI hub by 2030 as outlined in the AI National Action Plan. – Named
