3-time NBA champ, former Cavs draft pick retires after 15 seasons

3-time NBA champ, former Cavs draft pick retires after 15 seasons

CLEVELAND, Ohio — Three-time NBA champion shooting guard Danny Green has retired from the league after 15 seasons, he announced Thursday.

Green, 37, shared the news of his retirement on his podcast, “Inside the Green Room.”

“I’m officially moving on from the game of basketball, the NBA,” Green said. “It’s been a great run. To me, I’m very proud to be able to walk away from the game. I’m at peace with it. I wasn’t at first, but I think it was one of those things, once I turned 37, the body started reacting a little differently.”

Green played just two games this past NBA season for the Philadelphia 76ers. Prior to that, he played eight games with the Cleveland Cavaliers, which drafted him in the second round of the 2009 NBA Draft, and three games with the Memphis Grizzlies during the 2022-23 season.

The 6-foot-6 Green established himself as one of the NBA’s elite 3-point snipers, shooting 40% from beyond the arc for his career. He won NBA championships with the San Antonio Spurs in 2014, Toronto Raptors in 2019 and Los Angeles Lakers in 2020. Green was also named to the All-Defensive Second Team while with the Spurs during the 2016-17 season.

After being drafted by Cleveland in 2009, Green played in just 20 games for the Cavs before being waived by the team. He signed with San Antonio, where he played for the next eight seasons.

Green finishes his NBA career with an average of 8.7 points, 3.4 rebounds and 1.5 assists in 25.1 minutes across 832 career games, including 709 starts.
