CLEVELAND HEIGHTS, Ohio —
Hit-skip: Noble Road
At 2:50 p.m. Oct. 5, police were called to Noble and Ardmore roads where a woman’s car was hit by another vehicle. The woman was injured and was taken to MetroHealth Hospital.
She told police that the other driver was a young woman who stopped briefly to say she is a student and needs to sleep. She did not exchange insurance information with the other driver.
The victim and a witness gave police the offending driver’s license plate number, which police found was that of a local woman, 22.
Police called the woman, who agreed to come to the police station. The woman arrived with her mother.
She said she left the scene of the accident because she didn’t think the other car was damaged too badly, and because she was scared.
The victim’s car had a broken taillight and damage to its bumper and rear quarter panel.
The young woman said she dozed off just before the crash.
Police charged her with leaving the scene of an accident and failure to maintain an assured clear distance.
Theft: Mayfield Road
At 4:25 p.m. Oct. 3, police were dispatched to Walgreens, 3020 Mayfield Road, on a theft report. The store manager told officers that a man and woman were seen placing merchandise into a red bag and then leaving without paying for the items.
The suspects then boarded an RTA bus heading toward East Cleveland.
Police stopped the bus on Superior Road at Emily Street in East Cleveland. The suspects were on the bus, as was the red bag.
The bag was found to have contained $183.52 worth of stolen goods. The suspects were charged with theft.
At the jail, it was learned that the man was wanted on an Aurora police warrant, and the woman on Cuyahoga County Sheriff’s Office warrants.
The suspects were turned over to those agencies.
Disorderly conduct: Middlehurst Road
At 11:30 p.m. Oct. 3, officers were called for the first time that night to a home on Middlehurst Road because of a noise complaint. An intoxicated man was standing in front of the home and told police that he and his male “cousin” had an argument.
Police told the man it was time for him to leave and the man agreed to go. Officers, however, were called back to the house 20 minutes later. Again, the drunk man said he was about to leave, and officers again left.
At 12:15 a.m., officers in the area heard more screaming and loud music coming from the house. This time, the man, again standing outside, was confused and said he never told police he was going to leave.
Police arrested the man for disorderly conduct. At the jail, during the booking process, the man was uncooperative.
Auto theft: Mayfield Road
At 1:40 p.m. Oct. 5, a woman went to the police station to report that her car had been stolen from its parking spot at 2828 Mayfield Road. The woman had parked her 2020 Kia Soul there the night before and discovered it missing on the morning of Oct. 5.
A police Flock camera captured the vehicle’s image at 4:38 a.m. Oct. 5 as it was driven west on Mayfield Road, at Warrensville Center Road.
The abandoned car was found at 4 a.m. Oct. 6 by Cleveland police at East 75th Street and Port Avenue. Police gathered DNA swabs from the vehicle.
Weapon fired: Mayfield Road
At 3:25 p.m. Oct. 6, officers were dispatched to Whistle Express Car Wash, 2888 Mayfield Road, where a disturbance took place involving former co-workers. It was reported that a shot had been fired.
At the scene, as officers spoke to two men on nearby Middlehurst Road, a man walked up to police with his hands in the air stating that he had a gun. The man said he fired the gun once in the air as a warning shot.
Police took possession of the gun and further questioned the man. He said he was walking to work at the car wash when he was approached by three men, one of whom was a former car wash employee with whom he has had difficulties in the past.
The man told police he believed the three men were going to “jump” him, so he fired a shot in the air, which caused the three men to scatter. Police spoke with two of the three accused men, as the former co-worker had left the scene.
A Middlehurst resident told police he had video of the incident. A man who was friends with the man with the gun and was walking with him when the incident took place, corroborated the man’s account.
Police presented the matter to the city prosecutor to determine if charges would be filed.
