Irvine went missing with another British climber, George Mallory, during their journey in June 1924, only about 240 meters from the summit of Everest, while they were trying to complete the first documented ascent of the highest mountain in the world.
While Mallory’s body was found in 1999, Irvine’s body was not discovered nor was the camera that was with them, although it may confirm or deny whether they reached the summit.
The National Geographic team is waiting. DNA analysisto confirm that the foot remains belong to Irvine, which would be the first evidence of his death since his disappearance 100 years ago.
A few days before the shoe was found, the team had discovered an ax belonging to Irvin, which led him to speculate that his body might be close to the location of the axe.
Based on this hypothesis, the team spent the following days searching the melting glacier, until they discovered the remains of the foot and shoe.
