‘Irish Examiner’ scoops 13 nominations at Irish Journalism Awards

The Irish Examiner has received a total of 13 nominations for this year’s Irish Journalism Awards across a range of categories.

In the Campaigning Journalism category, the Irish Examiner was nominated for its Read My Lips campaign, a special cervical screening initiative in memory of Irish campaigner and women’s healthcare advocate Vicky Phelan.

On the eve of her first anniversary, the Irish Examiner teamed up with seven high-profile women to realise her plan to launch a multiplatform campaign to encourage women to take up cervical screening.

Their key message was:  ’Read my lips… choose screening – book a cervical screening test today’. The campaign was launched with a special edition of Feelgood, the Irish Examiner’s health and wellness section, as well as a comprehensive online and social campaign.

Irish Examiner reporter Alison O’Reilly was among the nominees for Scoop of the Year for her interview with the mother of the five-year-old girl who was stabbed outside her school on Parnell St in November 2023. In the exclusive interview, the girl’s mother talked about how “hate” fuelled the riots that followed in the capital city, her daughter’s slow recovery, and her gratitude to the Irish public for their love and support.

Ms O’Reilly and Irish Examiner security correspondent Cormac O’Keeffe have both been nominated for Crime Journalist of the Year.

Ms O’Reilly received the nod for her reporting on the murder of Denise Morgan by her ex-partner in New York, and for her interview with Michelle Cullen, who only found out that the man who raped her as a child was back on the streets when it was reported in a national newspaper.

Mr O’Keeffe was recognised for his reporting on right-wing threats to politicians’ safety, as well as Garda security services monitoring a group of individuals in Ireland associated with an Islamic State offshoot.

Irish Examiner social media editor Anna O’Donoghue was nominated in the Digital Innovation of the Year category for ieExplains, a jargon-free and informative breakdown of the stories making the news. Using concise explanatory text and simple to-the-point graphics on two Irish Examiner social media accounts – Instagram (@irish_examiner) and TikTok (@irishexaminer).

The team answer readers’ questions, such as ‘What is the difference between the Irish courts?‘, ‘Who can run for president?‘ and ‘How do I get my tax back?’.

The Irish Examiner’s front page on the Dublin riots scooped a nomination for Front Page of the Year. On the day in question, the evocative page captured the chaos in Dublin on the night of the riots, following the Parnell St attacks.

Irish Examiner special correspondent Mick Clifford has been nominated in three categories. They are Columnist of the Year (Broadsheet), Features, and Podcast of the Year for his podcast, The Mick Clifford Podcast

Meanwhile, Chani Anderson has been shortlisted for Best Video Journalism while Brendan O’Brian has been nominated for Sports Writer of the Year (Broadsheet).

Ms Anderson was recognised for her videos on iconic Irish producer and cultural trailblazer Lelia Doolan celebrating her 90th birthday by skydiving to raise money for Médecins Sans Frontières; an 11-year-old girl from Douglas donating her communion dress to Cork Penny Dinners; and her highlights from the Cork City Marathon.

Noel Baker and Esther McCarthy have been nominated in the Arts Journalism & Criticism and Showbiz Journalism categories respectively.
