Bashir, one of the organization’s medical staff, says: Doctors Without Borders,: “They left everything behind, with no clear path to survival, and with great global disregard for their suffering.”
Bashir added that he is still suffering from the loss of one of his relatives, a civilian who was kidnapped from his home by one of the parties to the conflict more than 10 months ago. “We do not have any information about him, and we do not know if he is still alive or will be released one day,” the doctor says sadly.
Collapse of the health system
With millions displaced, those fleeing face new challenges such as floods and disease outbreaks, while the health system is suffering Sudan Of complete collapse. “Most hospitals have been destroyed, and the medical facilities that are still functioning are isolated, lacking medicines, medical personnel, and resources. This deliberate deprivation is a cruel tactic of war,” Bashir said.
Despite all this suffering, Bashir sees a glimmer of hope in the efforts made by humanitarian workers. “We – doctors, nurses and logisticians – are doing everything we can to support those in need. Every action, no matter how small, counts and every effort carries great value.”
Bashir referred to his recent experience in the city of Twic in South Sudan, where he worked as a medical resource for a Doctors Without Borders project at the Main-upon District Hospital.
He explained that the region was already suffering from enormous humanitarian needs before the recent crisis, after thousands of citizens were displaced from South Sudan in 2022 due to sectarian violence in Agok. “The health system here is burdened by the spread of malaria, hepatitis C and malnutrition.”
Cry for Sudan
Bashir explained that his work in South Sudan opened a window for him on other dimensions of the Sudan crisis, which made him a witness to the tragic conditions faced by displaced Sudanese.
“What amazes me most is the extent to which the world has ignored this crisis, as there is hardly enough knowledge about the suffering of displaced Sudanese in countries such as South Sudan and Chad, despite the enormous humanitarian needs of these families.”
A call not to ignore Sudan
At the end of his speech, Bashir issued an urgent appeal to the world not to ignore the Sudanese crisis. “We live in a time of increasing crises – both man-made and natural. The toll of today’s wars is tragic beyond comprehension. In the midst of all this, I appeal to the world: do not allow Sudan to escape your attention.”
Bashir concluded his speech by asking: “Sometimes it seems as if no one cares, as if decision makers have deliberately ignored Sudan in favor of other crises. How long can we tolerate this inaction?”
