BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN, OCT 16 – The art of writing khat or Arabic calligraphy has flourished in line with the development of Islamic civilization which has its own history.
The evolution of calligraphy and Jawi writing gradually changed to become more artistic until the birth of various types of art and writing styles such as Nasakh, Diwani and Tsulus calligraphy.
His Royal Highness Paduka Seri Pengiran Muda ‘Abdul Malik, Chairman of the Administrative Council of Yayasan Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah (Foundation) said this while agreeing to inaugurate the Brunei Darussalam International Islamic Calligraphy Festival 2024 at the Main Conference Hall, International Conference Center, Berakas today.
In His Majesty’s speech, he explained that Brunei Darussalam is also not lagging behind in organizing steps towards dignifying the art of calligraphy.
Apart from the opinion, Jawi writing needs to continue to be strengthened because it is one of the most valuable treasures of Islam.
In that direction, he said again, the Yayasan Islamic Art and Calligraphy Study Center has started several projects and efforts that focus on giving encouragement and guidance especially among young people on the science of calligraphy.
“With this noble effort, we will be able to see and produce experts from among those who are able to further dignify the glory of the art of calligraphy in this country,” he said.
At the end of His Majesty’s speech, His Royal Highness expressed his deepest appreciation to the Foundation, the Center for Islamic Research and Islamic Arts, History and Culture (IRCICA), Sultan Sharif Ali Islamic University and Seri Begawan Religious Teaching University College as well as all parties involved in making the Mahrajan Council a success.
