Cars speeding past school bus on U.S. 77 causing concern

CRESWELL, Kan. (KSNW) — U.S. Highway 77 is raising concerns for members of the Cowley County community after the sheriff’s office received several complaints since the start of the school year.

Cars are speeding past a school bus, angering families and the Cowley County sheriff. He’s now asking the Kansas Highway Patrol to get involved.

A video taken this week shows several cars speeding past the school bus on U.S. 77 near 244th Drive that carries Jessica Wiechman’s children to school.

“I mean, I wouldn’t want to lose a life, and I’ve seen how many accidents that come so close to happening out here. It’s just … not even worth it,” Wiechman said.

Sarah Galvan, who also picks up her kids along U.S. 77, doesn’t want anybody in my family to get hurt.

“I don’t know what I’d do if I lost any of these kids,” said Galvan.

Galvan knows firsthand how fast drivers speed around the bus.

“She’s already got the red lights flashing, and she lays on the horn, and they don’t even stop,” Galvan said. “They just keep flying by.”

The Cowley County Sheriff’s Office contacted KHP to step up enforcement.

“I’d feel scared that one of these children might get injured … It’s very important for individuals to stop and make sure it’s safe,” Cowley County Sheriff David Falletti said.

The penalty for ignoring a stop sign on a school bus is over $300 and over $100 in court fees.
