20 participate in a breast examination workshop

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN, 18 OCT – A group of Third Year medical students from the Institute of Health Sciences Pengiran Anak Puteri Rashidah Sa’adatul Bolkiah (PAPRSB IHS), Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) successfully held a Self-Breast Examination Workshop located in the main building of PAPRSB IHS, new- recently.

As part of a group initiative known as CancerCatcher.bn, the students consist of Awang Mohammad Azim Daniel bin Bahrin, Dayang Nurhidayatul binti Awang Azman, Bryan Wong Xiu Yong, Dayang Nurul Hidayatul Syafiqah binti Muhammad Ali Firdaus, Dayang Nurbatrisyia binti Haji Abdul Manan, Dayang Auni Basyeerah binti Mohamad Rizal and Dayang Siti Farahiyah Teo binti Muhammad Zakwan Teo intend to raise awareness about breast cancer and empower participants with the knowledge and skills to carry out breast examinations themselves.

The workshop was attended by 20 female participants, who were involved in an informative session in both knowing the importance of early detection and the correct technique to perform breast self-examination led by a member of the group.

During the workshop, the participants not only had the opportunity to gain knowledge on how to identify abnormalities but also about the importance of regular checkups in improving breast health. The workshop was also filled with a brief educational talk on breast cancer followed by a comprehensive guide on breast self-examination techniques.

By dividing the participants into several small groups, they have the opportunity to undergo practical exercises and examinations mannequin specially designed. This interactive approach allows participants to improve their skills in a supportive and collaborative environment, ensuring they gain the confidence to perform breast self-exams effectively.

The workshop ended with an interactive question and answer session about breast health. Through the organization of this workshop, it is hoped that more awareness and efforts can be opened in the future to ensure that the community is always aware of breast health.
