CLEVELAND, Ohio – St. Xavier defeated St. Ignatius‚ 31-19, on Friday night at Ballaban Field at RDI Stadium in Cincinnati.
St. Xavier’s Daniel Vollmer rushed for 172 yards and three rushing touchdowns. He also caught a touchdown pass.
The Wildcats fell to 1-8 on the season. There are 18 teams in Division I, Region 1, and St. Ignatius entered the game in the 16th and final playoff spot, ahead of winless Elyria and GlenOak. St. Xavier (6-3) had already clinched a playoff sport in Region 4.
St. Xavier led 17-7 at the half. In the first quarter, Chase Herbstreit threw a 5-yard touchdown pass to Vollmer to open the scoring. Vollmer added an 8-yard rushing touchdown in the second quarter. St. Ignatius got the ball back with under two minutes in the half and drove the field. Jake Bobinski scored with 24 seconds remaining on a 8-yard run.
St. Xavier had 13-play drive to open the second half. The Bombers went for it on fourth-and-goal and Vollmer delivered with 3-yard rushing touchdown. The Wildcats responded with a 7-play, 58 yard drive capped by Owen Colwell’s 4-yard rushing touchdown. However the extra point was blocked.
On the final play of the third quarter, St. Xavier’s Jax Hendon intercepted a pass at the 5-yard line to end a Wildcat scoring opportunity. The Bombers took advantage and scored in just four plays as Vollmer scored on a 9-yard run for his fourth touchdown.
St. Ignatius scored on the first play after the ensuing kickoff as Dane Donovan threw a 73-yard touchdown pass to Trey Haddad. The Wildcats failed to convert the two-point attempt.
Donovan completed 16 of 26 passes for 306 yards. Hashed caught seven passes for 154 yards
St. Ignatius will host Football North Clarkson on Oct. 25. for the regular season finale.
