The Crimson Tide (5-1, 2-1 SEC) pulled a Houdini against South Carolina last week. The Gamecocks failed on a two-point conversion with 43 seconds left. Alabama trailed 19-14 heading into the final frame.

The offense, which is 10th in the nation at 41.7 points per game, has amassed 35 or more points in five of six games while the defense has bled for an average of 33 points per game in the last three contests.

Jalen Milroe continues a sparkling campaign, tallying 1,482 yards and 12 touchdowns with four interceptions. His 83.2 QBR is 11th-highest in the nation. He has completed 72.7% of his attempts. All four of his interceptions have come in his last three games.

Milroe has also gashed defenses with 77 carries for 319 yards and 11 touchdowns. He has garnered two rushing touchdowns in five of his six games this season.

Alabama has the playmakers for explosive performances, led by star freshman receiver Ryan Williams, who has tallied 23 receptions for 576 yards and six touchdowns, averaging an absurd national-best 25 yards per reception. The close call against South Carolina is the only game the 17-year-old has not scored a touchdown in this season.

Junior running back Jam Miller lead the ground game with 51 carries for 360 yards and five touchdowns.

The Crimson Tide run defense has been unrecognizable at times, averaging 129 yards per game and ranking 14th out of 16th in the SEC. They will have their hands full with one of the most talented backs in the country in their crosshairs.

Junior linebacker Jihaad Campbell touts 30 solo tackles with 1.5 sacks, a forced fumble and one interception.

Alabama has also been weak on third-down conversions in conference play, allowing the opposition to convert 46.8% of the time. Tennessee is averaging a 34% conversion rate on third downs in conference games.

As much as their defense has struggled, Alabama’s unit has been stubborn on the explosives, allowing the ninth-lowest percentage (4.3%) of plays with 20 or more yards.

The Volunteers (5-1, 2-1) had one slip up against Arkansas, 19-14, two weeks ago. They escaped with a 23-17 follow-up win against Florida in overtime.

Tennessee’s offense has taken a hit over the past couple games, but they are still the ninth-highest scoring team in the nation, churning out 42.2. points per game.

Freshman Nico Iamaleava is ready for the spotlight in another marquee matchup. He has amassed 1,219 yards and seven touchdowns with three interceptions. Iamaleava has not scored a touchdown in his last two games.

After a hot start, Iamaleava’s effectiveness has diminished, including 4.7 yards per average when under pressure. He will be chased heavily as Alabama look to restore order on the road.

Junior running back Dylan Sampson is ready to eat. He has the second-most touchdowns in the FBS with 15 and has compiled 699 yards on 118 carries, averaging 5.9 yards per carry. Freshman back DeSean Bishop can also burn, tallying 48 carries for 330 yards and three touchdowns.

Tennessee’s overall defense is stout, allowing just 10.7 points per game, which is the third-best in the FBS. Junior defensive lineman Joshua Josephs leads the way with 10 solo tackles and two forced fumbles.

The Volunteers’ pass defense has been shaky in recent matchups. They allowed Razorbacks quarterback Taylen Green 279 yards and Graham Mertz and DJ Lagway combined for 223 yards for the Gators.

Sophomore standout cornerback Jermod McCoy will likely draw the assignment of Williams. He has nine solo tackles and one interception while not allowing a touchdown on 173 coverage snaps.

Alabama leads the all-time series, 59-39-7. They have won 16 of the past 17 meetings. That one breakthrough was the memorable 52-49 victory on Oct. 15, 2022 when Chase McGrath hit a walk-off 40-yard field goal as time expired.

Expect another high scoring affair as this longstanding SEC ‘Third Saturday in October’ rivalry is renewed. Major College Football Playoff implications are also on the line in Knoxville.
