MANSFIELD, Ohio — A long standoff in which a man reportedly armed with a knife held a woman and two children hostage ended with police fatally shooting the suspect.
A news release from Mansfield police says officers were called to a residence shortly before 2 a.m. Saturday for a domestic violence incident. When officers arrived, they say the armed suspect was standing in the door of the home. He reportedly retreated into the home, where two children and his girlfriend were inside.
Hostage negotiators responded and began negotiating with the suspect, who appeared to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol, police say. The suspect eventually released the two children during three hours of negotiations, police say.
Shortly after the children were released, the female victim attempted to escape from the suspect. The man was fatally shot by officers, police say.
Details on how many officers were involved or how many shots were fired were not released. No other injuries were reported.
The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation is investigating the shooting.
