Medina plans for three bridge replacements in 2025 and 2026

MEDINA, Ohio – With 2024 almost over, the city’s engineering department is preparing for three bridge replacement projects over the next two years.

During a recent finance committee meeting, City Engineer Patrick Patton presented the committee with proposed legislation to hire the Strongsville-based firm Euthenics to provide engineering and design services for the South Huntington Street bridge replacement.

“If you recall, we were awarded $1.7 million from the ODOT Municipal Bridge program to complete the project,” Patton said. “Under the agreement, we are required to select an ODOT prequalified firm. Euthenics is my recommendation. They did the Gates Mills culvert bridge project a couple of years ago and it was a good experience.”

Council President John Coyne mentioned that West Smith Road had just recently reopened and wondered when South Huntington would need to close for the bridge replacement.

“People will need to be changing their driving habits again,” he said.

Patton said the bridge replacement is expected to take place in 2026 and the street will likely be closed for three to four months during construction.

Patton also mentioned that around the same time as the South Huntington Street bridge replacement, a bridge replacement will take place on Prospect Street. He said the city had received an additional $1.7 million grant for that project.

“This is very near the Wheeling and Lake Erie tracks so we will need to get into the Wheeling and Lake Erie right of way to replace the bridge and we will need a permit from them,” he said.

Patton also added that in 2025, the Medina Street bridge just north of West Smith Road will be replaced which will mean another road closure.
