5 hunters trapped by wildfires rescued in Osage Co.

READING, Kan. (KSNW) — Five hunters were rescued after being trapped by wildfires in Osage County.

The Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks Game Wardens say it happened Sunday at the Melvern Wildlife Area near Reading. Osage County Game Warden Tanner Houck and K9 Rip were in the area helping with search and rescue efforts.

K9 Rip found the tracks of two groups of hunters who had become trapped by the two large fires. They were able to guide the five hunters and one black lab hunting dog to safety.

A vehicle in the path of the fire was also safely moved. The warden and public lands manager are investigating the cause of the fires.

Anyone who was in the area who may have witnessed anything suspicious is asked to call Game Warden Houck at 620-450-7264.
