TOPEKA, Kan. (KSNT) – Agents with the Kansas Department of Revenue (KDOR) recently visited two restaurants, seizing their assets after they allegedly failed to pay their taxes.
Aubrey Challquist with KDOR said two separate restaurants were forced to close recently as they did not pay sales taxes owed to the state.
KDOR agents and local law enforcement seized assets, including bank accounts, on-site cash, business inventory and personal property during the execution of their tax warrants. The assets will be sold at public auctions to pay off the delinquent taxes. Both businesses were also sealed shut, with a public notice posted outside.
- La Estrella Restaurant

- Location – Garden City
- Tax warrant executed on Oct. 1.
- Taqueria El Gordo LLC
- Sales tax – $10,368.98

- Tax warrant executed Aug. 20.
Challquist said the KDOR works with the taxpayers to enter them into repayment agreements. However, people who continue to fail to pay will ultimately be visited by KDOR agents.
“KDOR’s responsibility to recover delinquent taxes not only ensures fairness for individuals and business owners who do pay their taxes but also ensures that money is lawfully collected to fund state and local programs on which Kansans depend,” Challquist said. “These programs include education, highways, public safety, and human services.”
