JAKARTA, OCT 22 – Tributes have been paid to an Italian surfer after he was attacked by a swordfish that stabbed him in the chest and then killed him off the west coast of Indonesia.
Giulia Manfrini, 36, was surfing when she was attacked by the fish in the Mentawai archipelago off the coast of Sumatra island last week.
“He was surfing in the waters of Pulau Masokut. A swordfish suddenly jumped and stabbed him in the chest,” said Acting Head of the Mentawai Disaster Mitigation Agency, Lahmudin Siregar, to AFP today.
“He was taken to a nearby health clinic but could not be saved,” he added.
Lahmudin said to the state news agency Betweenthe swordfish had caused an injury five centimeters deep.
The resort where Manfrini is staying said he likes to surf in the area. – AFP
