SPARTANBURG, South Carolina — Denny’s, the popular restaurant chain with nearly 1,600 locations nationwide, announced it is planning to close 150 of its restaurants.
Restaurant Business reports that Denny’s is targeting locations that have been performing poorly, “sapping the whole system’s vitality.” About half of the locations will be closed by the end of the year, with the other half closing in 2025.
The chain has not said which locations will close.
“Some of these restaurants can be very old. So when you think of a 70-year-old plus brand, you have a lot of restaurants that have been out there for a very long time,” Denny’s Executive Vice President and Chief Global Development Officer Stephen Dunn told investors, according to USA Today.
CNN reports Denny’s also is easing up on requiring locations to remain open 24 hours. About a quarter of its restaurants have not returned to 24-hour operation since the pandemic, CNN reports.
The chain also is going to trim its menu by more than 50%, from 97 options to 46, reports say.
