In a speech before the leaders of countries led by China and India during the official opening of the summit, Putin said, “The path to forming a multipolar global system is currently underway, and it is a dynamic and irreversible path.”

Putin said that the countries participating in the summit are showing their responsibility for the situation in the world today, “not in words, but in deeds.”

He continued: “All our countries defend equality, good neighborliness and mutual respect, and affirm the ideals of friendship and understanding, for the sake of the prosperity and well-being of the world, not in words but in deeds, as these countries demonstrate their responsibility for the future of the world, and contribute significantly to solving pressing regional problems.”

The Russian President, whose country chaired the BRICS for the current year, proposed “considering the most relevant aspects of the global agenda and exchanging views on the issue of cooperation between the BRICS countries on the international arena, including resolving acute regional disputes.”

Putin identified 3 main areas of cooperation between the BRICS countries: politics and security, economy and finance, and cultural and humanitarian communications.

He pointed to the efforts being made to ensure the smooth and full integration of the new participating countries into the work of the Association.

BRICS summit in brief

  • The 16th BRICS summit will be held from October 22-24 in Kazan.
  • The event is attended by Russian President Vladimir Putin, President of the People’s Republic of China Xi Jinping, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, UAE President Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, and Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed.
  • The delegations of Brazil and Saudi Arabia are headed by Foreign Ministers Maruro Luis Iker Vieira and Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud.
