Four tainted liquor sellers were sentenced to death

TEHRAN, OCT 23 – Iranian authorities sentenced four people to death today after being found guilty of selling tainted alcohol, which killed 17 people last year, the judiciary said.

“The death sentence against four defendants in the case of poisoning caused by the consumption of alcoholic beverages was carried out in the Karaj central prison,” said the judiciary news agency, Libra.

The defendant was sentenced to death in September 2023 for selling tainted alcohol that killed about 17 people and resulted in more than 190 others being hospitalized in Alborz province, west of Tehran.

Iran carries out the highest number of executions in a year after China, according to human rights groups including Amnesty International.

Iran banned the production and consumption of alcoholic beverages after the 1979 Islamic revolution.

Meanwhile, the latest case reported by Iranian media resulted in the deaths of about 40 people in northern Iran in recent months. – AFP
