Fake rideshare driver sentenced to prison for rape, kidnapping

AKRON, Ohio — An Akron man who sexually assaulted women while pretending to be a rideshare driver was sentenced Wednesday to a minimum of 20 years in prison.

A news release from Summit County Prosecutor Elliot Kolkovich says Mohamed Reeda, 25, could spend up to 24 years in prison. A jury convicted Reeda in February of rape, attempted rape and three counts of kidnapping. Reeda also was designated as a Tier III sex offender and will be on the state’s violent offender registry for 10 years.

“I am incredibly proud of these brave women who came forward to testify against Mr. Reeda,” Kolkovich said in a statement. “My hope is this sentence provides justice to them and helps keep Summit County safe.”

Prosecutors say Reeda’s crimes occurred between December 2022 and March 2023. Reeda would look for women in Akron who were walking alone or with one other female, police say, and would lure them into his vehicle. Reeda took three women to secluded areas, where he raped one and attempted to rape another, prosecutors say.
