Ohio State offensive lineman named finalist for prestigious honor

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Ohio State center Seth McLaughlin is one of 16 finalists for the William V. Campbell Trophy.

The award is presented to college football’s premier scholar-athlete, that recognizes a player for his, “Combined academic success, football performance and exemplary leadership.” Each of the 16 finalists will receive an $18,000 postgraduate scholarship, a figure that will be increased to $25,000 if he wins the trophy.

McLaughlin has a 4.00 GPA at Ohio State.

He is the program’s first NFF National Scholar-Athlete since 2019, when Jordan Fuller earned the same honor.

McLaughlin graduated summa cum laude from Alabama with a 4.00 GPA in 2022 in just two-and-a-half years. He was also named a first-team Academic All-American in 2023, before transferring to Ohio State.

He has also been at the center — literally — of a Buckeye offensive line that has paved the way for both TreVeyon Henderson and Quinshon Judkins to carve out successful starts to the season.

An NFL bet paid off

Former Ohio State defensive end Tyquan Lewis had an unfortunate bet to pay off.

Now a defender for the Indianapolis Colts, Lewis had to walk into the media room dressed as the Oregon Duck alongside former Oregon defensive lineman DeForest Buckner. He later removed the mascot head off Lewis to reveal his face to the crowd, then walked out of the room with a somber Lewis.

Had the Buckeyes won, Buckner would’ve had to wear a similar Ohio State outfit

Ohio State lost to Oregon 32-31 on Oct. 12 in Eugene. And while the loss was hard on Ohio State and specifically its defense, the defeat had consequences that extended to Indianapolis.
