Indonesia reaffirms support for Palestine during meeting in Russia

JAKARTA, 24 OCT – Indonesia’s Foreign Minister, Sugiono, affirmed the country’s firm commitment to the Palestinian people’s struggle for independence during a bilateral meeting with officials of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) in Kazan, Russia.

“I will ensure that the Palestinian issue remains at the forefront of Indonesian diplomacy, and we will continue to stand firm with the Palestinian people,” he said outside the BRICS Plus 2024 summit.

The newly appointed minister made a statement during a meeting with the Secretary General of the PLO Executive Committee, Hussein Al Sheikh, suggesting that the BRICS summit be used to strengthen cooperation as a positive force for peace in Palestine, according to the ministry’s statement.

He reiterated Indonesia’s political support for Palestine, including continued efforts to promote a permanent ceasefire and other peace initiatives aimed at achieving a two-state solution, adding that the commitment was also voiced by Prabowo Subianto during his inauguration as President of Indonesia on October 20.

Sugiono also affirmed Indonesia’s commitment to humanitarian aid for Palestine, both bilaterally and through United Nations agencies such as the Palestine Refugee Agency (UNRWA) and the International Labor Organization (ILO), while emphasizing the importance of collective efforts to promote peace and stability in the Middle East.

Meanwhile, in a separate bilateral meeting with India’s Foreign Minister, Dr S. Jaishankar, Sugiono welcomed India’s decision to lift the ban on non-basmati white rice exports, which will improve food security.

The two ministers discussed cooperation in various sectors such as nutrition, housing, pharmaceuticals, defense, and education. – Named
