MAYFIELD, Ohio — The village’s former service director, Scott Sipos, has been indicted by a Cuyahoga County grand jury on charges of theft in office, fraud and two additional misdemeanor charges.
Sipos was terminated from his job on June 14 following an investigation of his activities. It is alleged that he improperly and illegally used village-issued credit cards and vendor accounts, and failed to properly account for his personal time out of his office.
According to a Oct. 24 release from Mayor Brenda Bodnar, Mayfield Village police, after allegations were made, initiated an investigation into Sipos’ activities on May 29, 2024.
Sipos was placed on paid administrative leave pending the investigation, and shortly after was terminated from his job.
The police department then forwarded the matter to the Cuyahoga County Prosecutor’s Office.
An indictment means that sufficient evidence has been found to formally charge a suspect, and that a felony criminal case has begun moving towards trial.
The release stated that the village will not issue further comment during the prosecution of the charges.
A 1992 Mayfield High School graduate, Sipos had worked for the village’s service department since 1993. He was a foreman when Bodnar tabbed him in March of 2021 to head the department.
Sipos has been replaced by Frank Stupczy, who took the oath of office from Bodnar on Aug. 19.
Stupczy has been employed in the Mayfield Village Service Department since 2006. He started on a part-time basis and became a full-time employee in 2013.
Stupczy holds master’s degree in public administration and is a certified arborist. He previously worked as Sipos’ assistant service director and was the interim service director while Sipos was on leave.
