This anecdote is told in the environment of the Berlin University of the Arts: The US composer and sound artist Alvin Lucier is said to have once given his composition class a mechanical alarm clock and given them the task of finding out where in the room the alarm clock ticks the loudest. After a while the class presented more or less lucky finds. When placed on a table top the alarm clock ticked louder than when held in the hand, when lying down it ticked louder than when standing up and it was loudest when placed in a trash can.
