A Turkish ship begins exploring for oil off Somalia this month

The agreement – concluded last March – includes cooperation in the field of exploration for… Oil and production, and allowed the Turkish Petroleum Corporation to obtain licenses in three areas in Somali waters.

The ministry said that the Oruc Reis ship will explore areas extending to about five thousand square kilometers, adding that President Recep Tayyip Erdogan will attend a celebration in Türkiye on Saturday to mark the ship’s departure.

Turkish Energy Minister Alp Arslan Bayraktar said in the statement, “We expect that the area where Oruc Reis will operate will be an oil discovery area.”

The ship (Oruch Reis) will be accompanied by two naval frigates and support ships, and it will reach the coast of Somalia via the Mediterranean Sea, the Suez Canal, and the Red Sea.

Bayraktar said that the Turkish Petroleum Corporation has licenses to explore in an offshore area divided into three fields covering a total area of ​​15,000 square kilometers. The 3D seismic study is expected to last about seven months.
