Akron native’s independent film ‘Escaping Ohio’ gets trailer, release date

CLEVELAND, Ohio — “Escaping Ohio,” the independent film, written, produced and starring Akron native Jessica Michael Davis, has a trailer and a premiere date.

The coming-of-age film, which Davis shot in and around Akron in 2021, will be available on video on demand platforms such as Apple TV starting on Nov. 8.

“Even though the title is ‘Escaping Ohio,’ it’s kind of a love letter to my hometown (Akron) and a lot of places we know and love,” Davis told cleveland.com prior to the film’s local premiere at LeBron James Family Foundation’s House Three Thirty last December.

Indeed, the 90-second trailer showcases several locations that Akronites will recognize such as the former Rubber Bowl site, Brandywine Falls and Handel’s Homemade Ice Cream in Tallmadge.

In “Escaping Ohio,” Davis plays Sam, a recent high-school graduate eager to start a new life beyond the Buckeye State. Her ambitions conflict with her best friend, JJ (Collin Kelly-Sordelet), who is determined to convince her to stay. The cast also includes Emily Bergl and Adam Pascal.
