Akron Public Schools selects alumnus to fill board vacancy

AKRON, Ohio – Akron Public Schools on Tuesday named Akron pastor Gregory Harrison as its newest member.

Harrison will serve the remaining unexpired term of Job Esau Perry, who resigned in September. Harrison was one of five finalists to be interviewed for the seat, according to a district news release.

A graduate of Garfield High School and the University of Akron, Harrison is a regular board meeting attendee and speaker. Harrison described himself as an “experienced advocate for the rights of Akron Public Schools children and their families,” according to the release.

Harrison currently serves as senior pastor of Antioch Baptist Church and as the community engagement liaison for the Office of Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost. He is a U.S. Army veteran and retired law enforcement officer. Harrison has many years of community service, including serving as a youth basketball and football coach, according to the release.

“I possess a good understanding of the responsibilities and obligations fiduciary-responsible legislators, such as school board members, have in making public bodies work for the people they serve,” Harrison said in his application letter.
