The Yankees

New York edged the Royals with power and fielding defense as a close series continues to wind down.

Giancarlo’s towering home run proved to be the difference in the top of the eighth inning. He had three of their four hits in the game, including a stolen base.

New York is 13-7 in their last 20 games with a combined ERA of 3.23. They had a plus-18 run differential against the Royals during the regular season.

Yankees players to watch

Giancarlo Stanton notched three hits, including two-RBI and a home run. That powerful bat could be the closing curtain on the Royals season if it lights up again tonight.

Aaron Judge’s postseason struggles march on, going just 1-for-11 with five strikeouts in the series. Judge does have three walks to his credit.

After three hits in Game 1, Juan Soto has found his way to the bases via three walks. He crossed the plate in Game 3 and punched in a sacrifice fly. Soto is a career .368 hitter at Kauffman Stadium, touting a blistering 1.065 OPS.

The Royals

It was the first postseason playoff game at Kauffman Stadium, and it’s now in the rearview as the Royals will have to dig deep to force a winner-take-all Game 5 at Yankee Stadium.

The 3-2 loss will sting after yet another close contest. Michael Massey’s triple brought in Kyle Isbel in the bottom of the fifth, tying the game at 2-2. Kansas City mustered just six hits.

All five of their playoff games have been decided by two runs or less. Four of those games were decided by one run. Royals fans are likely if for another thriller tonight, regardless of how it ends.

The Royals have not won a game (0-7) at Kauffman Stadium since Sept. 16.

Royals players to watch

Bobby Witt Jr. broke through with a lone hit in Game 3. He will need much more in order to help the Royals force a Game 5. Witt Jr. hammered 32 home runs with 109 RBI and had a .332 batting average in the regular season.

Vinny Pasquantino is also trying to find his groove. The Royals key piece is marred in a 0-for-12 slump. He notched 19 home runs with 97 RBI while batting .267 during the regular season.

Michael Massey came up clutch in Game 3, notching his fourth hit of the series. Massey nabbed 14 home runs and 45 RBI in the regular season.

Tonight’s pitching matchup

(NY) Gerrit Cole (0-0, 5.40 ERA) vs. (KC) Michael Wacha (0-0, 6.75 ERA)

Though the Yankees got the victory in Game 1, Cole was battered for three earned runs and seven hits in just over fine innings of work. He did tally four strikeouts in the rocky showing. The reigning AL Cy Young Award winner is 10-6 with a 3.05 ERA in 18 career postseason games. Cole was 8-5 with a 3.41 ERA and 99 strikeouts this season.

The Yankees bullpen has been stellar. They have not allowed an earned run in over 13 2/3 innings.

Wacha had an equally shaky start to the series, allowing three runs, four hits and three walks in four innings. Three of the four hits went for extra bases. Wacha is 4-3 with a 5.36 ERA and 45 strikeouts in nine career postseason games. He went 13-8 with a 3.35 ERA and 145 strikeouts this season.

Kanas City’s bullpen is likely running on fumes, which could force the Royals to stick with Wacha longer than they would like.
